PHILADELPHIA – After Saturday’s match with Yale, two things can be said about the 2011 edition of the Penn men’s soccer team. First, they are not afraid to take shots as the Quakers took 24 shots on the evening. Second, Penn has no qualms rallying when faced with adversity as the Red and Blue fought back to tie the match while down a man in the 83^rd minute. However, the rally was snuffed out by the Bulldogs on a golden goal in the second overtime as Yale escaped Rhodes Field with a 2-1 win in double overtime.

Charlie Paris had the game-winner, finishing a two-on-one with Chris Dennen in the 105^th minute to eliminate Penn from Ivy title contention and negate another superb effort from Christian Barreiro.

For the fourth game in a row, Barreiro was the catalyst on offense for Penn, and again it was the senior coming through on a restart in fine fashion. In the 83^rd minute – four-and-a-half minutes after Nick Unger was sent off for a red card leaving Penn down a man – Barreiro lined up for a free kick inches outside the edge of Yale’s 18. The fact that he was taking a free kick and not a penalty was riling up the Red and Blue’s supporters as the handball Yale was called for was very close to being inside the 18, but Barreiro turned the catcalls to cheers when he went low to the right corner on the free kick, scoring his seventh goal of the season and setting a new career high with 18 points.

Barreiro’s goal tied the match after Yale took the lead on a Dennen goal in the 57^th minute. He broke in behind the first line of Penn’s defense to gather a lobbed pass from Marcus DiLallo and shot the ball to the right post before the next wave of Penn defense could halt his progress.

That goal came on Yale’s first shot on goal in the match, one of just four offerings to reach goal on the evening. Penn, meanwhile, was making Bobby Thalman work. The Quakers took 24 total shots, sending nine to goal. In the second half, Penn outshot the Bulldogs, 13-7, and 6-3 on shots to goal. After Barreiro tied the match, Penn took the final four shots of regulation and carried the play.

In the first overtime, Yale had two chances to win, with the first shot by Conner Lachenbruch high and a follow-up from Max Morice blocked by a sliding Jake Levin. Barreiro had Penn’s only shot of overtime, but it was wide. In the second overtime, Paris was first wide on a close-range shot in the 102^nd minute before his team started transition and developed the winning sequence.

Barreiro finished with eight shots, three of which reached goal. Duke Lacroix had six shots while Travis Cantrell and Jonny Dolezal each had two. Max Kurtzman made two saves in goal for Penn.

The Quakers are now 6-6-2 this season and 1-3-0 in the Ivy League. Yale improves to 7-5-2 and 3-1-0 inside the Ancient Eight. Penn is back in action next Saturday at Brown with a 7 p.m. kick.
