Penn State adds Wassell as assistant coach
June 15, 2012

Nittany Lion women’s soccer head coach Erica Walsh introduced Tim Wassell as the program’s new full-time assistant coach on Monday. Wassell has been with the Penn State program since 2010 on a volunteer basis. Wassell replaces long-time assistant Michael Coll, who held the post for eight years. Coll was hired as UNLV women’s soccer head coach on Apr. 19. Under the new position, Wassell will take over many of the recruiting responsibilities in addition to his goalkeeper duties.

Tim’s commitment and dedication to this program over the past two years as our volunteer coach made him an easy choice for the position,” Walsh noted. “He is incredibly passionate about his work and has done an outstanding job with our goalkeepers during his time with this program. With his strong personality, work ethic, and business background he will help us to continue to bring in the top student-athletes in the country as our recruiting coordinator.  We arevery fortunate to welcome Tim Wassell to our staff on a full-time basis.

Obviously, I want to express my gratitude to Coach Walsh and the Penn State administration for providing mewith this fantastic opportunity,” Wassell said. “My last two years with the program have been nothing short of incredible and I’m extremely excited and honored to join the Penn State family in this role and work alongside some of the best coaches and student-athletes in the country.  The women’s soccer program at Penn State has a truly remarkable history and an equally bright future and I look forward to contributing to this tradition of excellence.”

Wassell has been in charge of the goalkeepers and tactical analysis under Walsh for the past two seasons. The former PSU Altoona women’s soccer head coach, Wassell played an integral role in the Nittany Lions continued success and improvement, winning the past two Big Ten titles and advancing to last year’s NCAA Sweet 16. Under Wassell’s command, starting goalkeeper Erin McNulty (Winnipeg, Manitoba) earned All-Big Ten Second Team honors as the Nittany Lion defense posted a conference-leading 14 shutouts going 21-5-0.

Wassell came to Penn State after three excellent years at PSU Altoona. There, Wassell turned around the Division III program earning a 48-11-5 record and earningNSCAA D-III Great Lakes Coach of the Year Honors in 2008. He also grabbed the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2007 and 2008.
