Pioneers Stun Greyhound Soccer Team

PORTALES, N.M. — The Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team (5-3) dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting Wayland Baptist University (6-0), Wednesday afternoon at ENMU Soccer Field. Freshman midfielder Jose Nieto (Dallas, Texas/North Crowley HS) tallied his first goal of the season on a cross pass from Carlos Viveros (So., M, Houston, Texas/Morton Ranch HS), at the 60:25 mark.

The contest marked the Pioneers first-ever win over Eastern, as the Hounds hold a 2-1-1 edge in the overall series. Last season, the teams played to a 1-1 tie, in Plainview, Texas.

Wayland Baptist capitalized on a corner kick, which resulted in a scramble in front of the ENMU net, when Vitalis Atemafac scored off a pass from Miguel Teos. The Pioneers tacked on an additional goal 1:10 later when Lamin Sawaneh scored from 35 yards out.

Early in the second half, WBU extended its lead to 3-0, when Jevaughn Vance scored from 45 yards out with a ball lobbed into the right side of the Greyhound net. After a deflection in front of the Pioneer net, Viveros fired a cross pass to Nieto, to get Eastern on the board.

Eastern held a 12-9 edge in overall shots, with each team firing four shots on goal. Both teams had four corner kicks, with all of the Greyhounds corners coming in the second half.

The Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team will return to action, next Thursday, to open Lone Star Conference play against West Texas A&M. The game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. MDT.
