Pirates Shut Out by Spartans, 1-0
GREENVILLE, N.C.--The East Carolina soccer team dropped its first game of the ECU Soccer Tournament to UNCG, 1-0, in front of the second largest crowd in stadium history (514).
With the loss, the Pirates fall to 1-1-1 overall and UNCG improved to 2-1-0.
UNCG was able to seal the victory with a goal by freshmen forward Georgia Brown who beat ECU goalkeeper Saundra Baron on a one on one situation in the 57th minute.
The first half was deadlocked due to the tough defense played by both squads but the Pirates had opportunities to jump on the board. ECU out shot UNCG 7-2 but was unable to find the back of the net.
Midfielder Lexi Miller had one of the closest shots of the night in the eight minute of the contest when a ball sailed just inches above the crossbar.
The Pirates were close to striking in the second half but fell just short. Midfielder Kelsey Reeves had a clear path to the goal but the ball just missed the inside of the net and soared over the crossbar.
ECU outshot UNCG (14-6) as well as had more shots on goal (5-2) but was unable to score.
East Carolina returns to action on Sunday at 2 p.m. as the Pirates take on the Western Carolina. For ticket information and tournament updates, visit ECUPirates.com.
