Pirates Tie No. 21 Tribe, 2-2, In Double-Overtime

Kelly Johnson and Lexi Miller Record First Career Goals

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Riding a four-game winning streak, the East Carolina women’s soccer team battled No. 21 William & Mary to a two-all tie in double-overtime Sunday afternoon at the ECU Soccer Stadium. With the draw the Pirates are now 4-1-1, while the Tribe are 4-1-2 on the season.

Scoring goals on the day for ECU were freshman Kelley Johnson and redshirt freshman Lexi Miller. Senior Kimmy Cummings recorded her second assist of the season and team-leading 12th point, while true freshmen Mackenzie Semerad, Brett Thomas and Miller were also credited with assists. In goal, sophomore Christiane Cordero collected a season-high nine saves.

The Tribe wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard, scoring in the 10th minute of play. Running down the right side of the pitch, Audrey Barry fired a cross towards the near post. Mallory Schaffer found the rebound and beat Cordero for the first score of the match.

Johnson knotted the game at one with three minutes left in the half. Miller sent a pass across the box where Cummings flipped the ball over to an open Johnson, who sent a shot past keeper Katherine Yount.

Five minutes after the intermission, William & Mary regained the lead. On the attack, Cortlyn Bristol centered the ball to the edge of the 18-yard box to Aly Shaughnessy, who sent a shot to the lower-left corner for a 2-1 advantage.

The Pirates answered back in the 71st minute, tying the match for a second time on a goal from Miller. Miller took a pass from Brett Thomas and headed the ball past the Tribe keeper, tying the match at 2-2. Semerad was also credited with an assist on the play, her second of the season.

In the first 10-minute overtime period, senior Amanda Malkiewicz took a pair of shots sending one high of the crossbar and one wide left of the box. Bristol took the lone shot for the Tribe also sailing one high of the crossbar.

In the second-over time, both teams were able to get a shot on goal, but neither team would tally a game-winning score.

William & Mary out-shot the Pirates, 17-10, getting 11 shots on goals to just four for ECU. Corners were 5-2 in favor of the Tribe.

The Pirates be back on the pitch next Sunday, Sept. 18 when they travel to Francis Marion for a 3 p.m. tilt.
