PK Stands Up as Panthers Fall 1-0 at Butler

August 30, 2015

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - An early penalty kick provided the difference as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision in a defensive-minded contest against Butler University Sunday afternoon at the Butler Bowl.

The Panthers (1-2-0) and Bulldogs (2-0-1) played to a scoreless affair outside of the 15th-minute PK by Sophia Maccagnone that stood up as the winner.

"I was pleased with how we played defensively today," head coach Troy Fabiano said. "We were much more organized defensively and much better than we were on Friday night. Butler has a few very dangerous players and we were able to execute our game plan to keep them in front of us and prevent their opportunities."

Junior Paige Lincicum led a very organized defensive effort for Milwaukee. She followed up a career-high 10 save effort Friday with another quality outing Sunday, concluding the afternoon with seven saves.

"I am definitely proud of the effort and our organization," Fabiano said. "Today is something we can continue to build on as the season goes forward."

The only scoring of the day occurred at the 14:21 mark. One of the Butler forwards collected a pass in the box and turned to shoot, but a UWM defender was called for getting a hand on the ball on the way to the goal. Maccagnone went left and snuck it past Lincicum and that was it for the Bulldogs on the day.

Milwaukee maintained quality possession throughout, but could not break through against BU goalkeeper Madison Card for the equalizer. Card extended her scoreless streak to 225 minutes on the season and maintained her perfect 0.00 goal-against average in 2015.

The Panthers return home, next taking the field a week from today when they travel to DeKalb, Ill., for a 2 p.m. contest against Northern Illinois.
