YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (www.purduesports.com) – Purdue women’s soccer held a halftime lead and dominated the shot and corner kick counts, but had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Youngstown State Sunday afternoon.

The Boilermakers’ four-game win streak became a five-game unbeaten streak after Sunday’s result, which was their first draw on the road since September 2009 at Wisconsin. It was Purdue’s first overtime game since winning in the 103rd minute at Miami (Ohio) in the 2013 non-conference finale.

Maddy Williams scored her third goal of the season and 13th career in the 20th minute. After also scoring in Thursday’s win at Marshall, the sophomore has scored in consecutive games for the third time as a Boilermaker. However, Williams was unable to convert on a penalty kick opportunity in the 63rd minute.

Youngstown State (3-2-1) goalkeeper Jackie Podolsky finished with 10 saves, helping keep her team in the game as Purdue (4-1-1) racked up a 31-11 edge in the shot count and 13-0 advantage in corner kicks. It was the Boilers’ highest shot count since recording 34 in a 2013 loss to Xavier. Purdue also had 13 corners in a 2013 draw with Seattle and held Akron without a corner kick opportunity in the 2013 season-opening win.

Youngstown State’s Tyesha Kizer scored the equalizer in the 48th minute with a perfectly-placed shot into the top right 90 of the net. Goalkeeper Erika Yohn got her hand on the ball but was unable to keep it out of the net. Yohn finished with five saves, highlighted by a diving save to her left on a shot by Kizer in the 83rd minute that preserved the draw.

Andrea Petrina connected the pass to Williams that led to the goal, which was sored with a shot inside the left post from 20 yards out just to the right of the center of the field. Petrina recorded her first collegiate assist. The freshman from suburban Toronto nearly ended the game in the second minute of overtime, forcing Podolsky to make a diving save to her left in the first notable action of OT.

Holly Gregory, Megan Kaser and Petrina all accounted for some quality corner kicks served into the heart of the 18-yard box. Mollie Kuramoto got her head on numerous corners, highlighted by hitting the crossbar with a header off a Kaser corner in the 43rd minute. Christa Szalach missed high on the rebound opportunity.

An apparent hand ball on the Penguins inside the 18-yard box led to the corner kick opportunity. Williams connected on a PK chance Thursday at Marshall with a shot into the left side of the net, but on this day Podolsky was able to dive to her right to make the save.

Podolsky also made an impressive quick save on a point blank one touch shot by Erika Arkans after a right-to-left cross from Alex Hairston in the 51st minute.

Vanessa Korolas, Mikayla Lasky, Kim Love, Kuramoto and Williams all went the distance among the Purdue field players. The game was played on a hot artificial turf surf on a sunny day in northeast Ohio. Arkans (105) and Gregory (91) also logged 90-plus minutes. Szalach played 41 minutes to lead the reserves.

The Boilermakers return to action Friday when they host No. 7 Penn State for both teams’ Big Ten opener. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Boilermaker Soccer Complex.
