IOWA CITY, Iowa (www.purduesports.com) – Purdue women’s soccer received an equalizing goal early in the second half from Hadley Stuart but Iowa responded with two more scores and defeated the Boilermakers, 3-2, Sunday afternoon.

Purdue (6-4-1, 1-2-0 Big Ten) has managed to score in each of its first four road games this year. An Alex Hairston right-to-left cross led to an own goal off the leg of an Iowa defender in the final minute of the game. The Hawkeyes (11-1, 2-1 Big Ten) entered the day having surrendered only one goal in their first five games at home this season.

Overall, Purdue has scored in seven consecutive games, the team’s longest single-season streak since scoring in the first 12 games of the 2009 campaign. Stuart scored her fourth goal, and seventh career, in the 60th minute. She finished off a rebound opportunity near the left post after Nicole Hively forced Iowa goalkeeper Hannah Clark to make a diving save. Taylor Niewoit initiated the rush by dribbling the ball up the field before playing it to Jordan Pawlik on the left flank. Pawlik connected a pass to Hivey to also earn an assist on the play.

Stuart scored for the first time away from the Boilermaker Soccer Complex. But Purdue also lost for the first time when Stuart has scored during her career.

Iowa scored the go-ahead goal in the 64th minute when a leaping Alex Melin got her head on a free kick served in by Melanie Pickert from the west sideline, redirecting it off the piping on the top left corner of the goal frame. The ball bounced into the net as it landed.

What proved to be the game-winning goal was scored in the 78th minute on a counterattack. Ashley Catrell connected a left-to-right through ball to Dana Dalrymple, who had a step on the Purdue defenders on the weak side of the rush. Dalrymple scored into the left side of the net from top of the 18-yard box.

Another through ball setup Iowa’s first goal, scored in the 15th minute to give the Hawkeyes a halftime lead. Purdue trailed at the half in both games of its weekend road trip to Nebraska and Iowa, marking the only times this season that it has faced a deficit after the opening 45 minutes.

Dalrymple connected the through ball to Nasenbenny, who beat Clara Kridler inside the left post on the 1-v-1 opportunity versus the Boilers’ goalkeeper.

Purdue held an advantage in possession for long stretches of the game, including much of the first half after Iowa had gone ahead. The Boilermakers were once again shorthanded, playing without starters Jessica Warren, Marta Lynch and Emma Lancaster as well as Shae Desmond. Soraya Toppin-Herbert made her first collegiate start Sunday. Hively started the second half and recorded her first collegiate assist. Mina Mansoori made her Purdue debut off the bench in the second half.

Kridler and Iowa starting goalkeeper Meg Goodson each made a nice punch save to keep the opposition from scoring. Goodson made an impressive save on a blast off the foot of Stuart in the 41st minute. Stuart unleashed a rocket from 30 yards out in the center of the field and Goodson got a hand on it time to deflect it over the top of the crossbar.

In the 86th minute, the referee ruled that Kridler picked up a back pass from a teammate, awarding the Hawkeyes and indirect free kick from the inner edge of the 18-yard box. Kridler was able to deflect Pickert’s shot over the crossbar and the Boilers successfully defended the ensuing corner kick.

Melissa Casella, Tayler Francel, Kim Love, Jordan Frick, Hairston and Stuart went the distance among the Purdue field players. Chinyelu Asher logged 41 minutes to lead the reserves.

The last two Purdue-Iowa games in Iowa City, and three of the last four meetings overall, have bended in 3-2 final scores in favor of the home team. The Boilermakers’ last own goal in their favor was in a September 2010 overtime loss to Texas A&M.

With its three-game road stretch to open Big Ten play complete, Purdue is now scheduled to play five of its final eight league matches at home, beginning Friday against Northwestern. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
