WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (www.purduesports.com) – Purdue women’s soccer dominated the shot count for much of the day but the Boilermakers still found themselves tied with Eastern Illinois in the second overtime until Alex Hairston scored the program’s first golden goal since November 2009 to lift her team a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon at the Varsity Soccer Complex.

Taylor Niewoit’s first collegiate goal gave Purdue (2-0) the lead in the 69th minute. But EIU (0-2) equalized seven minutes later when Caitlin Greene headed in a corner kick.

Eastern Illinois goalkeeper Jessica Taldone kept her team in the game for much of the day, finishing with 11 saves. Her best stop came in the 92nd minute when she got a hand on a rising blast off the foot of Hadley Stuart, deflecting the shot over the top of the crossbar.

Hairston scored her second goal of the season and eighth career in the 106th minute, blasting a shot into the top 90 on the right side of the net from the top of the 18-yard box. Freshman Emma Lancaster connected the pass to Hairston to earn her second assist of the weekend. Jessica Okoroafo was the last Boiler to score the game-winning goal in each of the first two games of the season, which Hairston did this weekend, accomplishing the feat in 2009.

Five of Hairston’s eight career goals have now proved to be game-winners. An own goal was the difference in Purdue’s last overtime win, which came versus Iowa in the 2009 regular-season finale. Sylvia Forbes’ golden goal four days earlier in an overtime victory at Indiana was the last of its kind credited to a Purdue player. The Boilermakers had gone 0-4-3 in games longer than 90 minutes since their last overtime win.

Jordan Frick and Stuart set up Niewoit’s score, connecting a pass along the west sideline and giving Stuart the space to play a left-to-right cross from the northwest corner of the field. After the ball initially deflected off an EIU defender, it caromed to Niewoit, who finished the sequence with a shot inside the right post from the top of the six-yard box.

Eastern Illinois created both of its corner kick chances on the day in the final 15 minutes of regulation and successfully scored on the first opportunity. Allie Lakie played the corner to the far post from the southwest corner of the field where Greene was able to head it in the net amongst a scrum of players.

Both goalkeepers had to make one final in the final 70 seconds of regulation to assure the game remained tied. Yana Lyon then replaced Clara Kridler to begin the overtime period. Kridler played all of regulation despite a sore groin Purdue head coach Robert Klatte said after the game.

Purdue had a 13-2 advantage in the shot count at the half but was unable to take the lead. Taldone made a nice diving save to her right to keep Hairston from scoring in the fourth minute. With just over five minutes remaining in the first half, Makaela Nellams hit the crossbar from the top of the 18-yard box and Taldone recovered in time to make a save on Shae Desmond’s follow up shot.

Defenders Kim Love, Jessica Warren and Frick went the distance in the overtime win. Stuart (98) and Marta Lynch (94) also logged 90-plus minutes. Freshman Melissa Casella logged 66 minutes to lead the reserves. Desmond (58) and Nellams (56) also played extended minutes off the bench.

The Boilermakers return to action Friday for a 7 p.m. game at Louisville, which is their only road game of the nonconference portion of the regular season.
