LAWRENCE, Kan. (www.purduesports.com) – Kansas found the back of the net twice in each half and limited Purdue women’s soccer without a goal during the regular run of play, defeating the Boilermakers, 4-1, Sunday afternoon.

Both teams scored on a penalty kick. Hadley Stuart was taken down in the top right corner of the 18-yard box in the 83rd minute, leading to a PK chance for Jordan Pawlik. The senior connected on the opportunity to make it a 3-1 game and end the Jayhawks’ shutout streak at 348 consecutive minutes dating back to the season opener on Aug. 23. It was Pawlik’s first goal of the season and 10th at Purdue.

Kansas (3-1) scored first when Liana Salazar connected on her penalty kick chance in the 19th minute. Pawlik was called for the foul on the right side of the 18-yard box that led to the PK chance. The Boilermakers (2-2) have surrendered four goals in each of their two losses this season. The nine goals against in the last three games represents the most allowed by Purdue over a three-game nonconference stretch since the 2003 NCAA Tournament (10).

Purdue enjoyed an advantage in possession for the first 30 minutes of the game before Kansas began to turn the tables on a cloudless, hot day in Lawrence. The Jayhawks scored on counterattacks in the 36th and 59th minutes to open up a 3-0 advantage. The Boilermakers had a set piece chance from the top of the KU third of the field moments before Ashley Williams scored in the first half. Williams broke free from the Purdue backline and scored from the right flank. Caroline Kastor scored on a similar sequence up the left flank early in the second half.

Goalkeepers Clara Kridler (five) and Jordan Ginther (four) teamed up to make nine saves as the Boilermakers were out shot (23-14) for the first this season. Ginther took over in the 64th minute, seeing action in relief for the third time in the first four games of her college career.

After scoring 12 times in their first three games, the Boilers’ quality offensive opportunities were limited on this day. Kansas goalkeeper Kaitlyn Stroud was able to make the saves on all five Purdue shots on goal during the run of play.

The Jayhawks capped the scoring in the 85th minute with the most eye-pleasing goal of the day. Kastor connected a right-to-left cross to the head of Courtney Dickerson for a redirected score that Ginther had no chance to stop.

Purdue had Kim Love in the starting lineup at center back for the first time this season after the sophomore missed the first three games due to injury. Melissa Casella and Love were the only Boilers to go the distance. Makela Nellams also made her first start of the season as Holly Gregory and Megan Kaser came off the bench Sunday. Gregory ended up playing 59 minutes, the most among reserves and primarily in an attacking roll. Kaser was the first Boiler off the bench. Fellow freshman Mikalya Lasky played the entire second half at center back.

Purdue returns to action Friday when its hosts Dartmouth at 7 p.m.
