WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (www.purduesports.com) – Maddy Williams continued her goal-scoring rampage this month with her fourth career multi-goal game, providing much of the offense in Purdue women’s soccer’s 3-0 season-opening win vs. Ohio Friday evening at the Boilermaker Soccer Complex.

Williams scored early in both halves to become the first player in program history to ever account for the team’s first two goals of a new season as well as the first Boiler to post a multi-goal game in two season openers. The junior also scored twice in the 2013 season-opening win vs. Akron. Including Purdue’s two preseason exhibition games, the forward has already scored seven goals this month. She pushed her career total to 18 Friday, moving into eighth place in program history.

The Boilermakers (1-0) dominated the second half, racking up a 16-4 advantage in the shot count. Ohio goalkeeper Vanessa Cordoba made a number of quality saves throughout the night en route to finishing with eight. Andrea Petrina scored in the final minute to account for the final margin. The sophomore scored in last year’s preseason win at Illinois State last year, but Friday’s goal was her official marker at Purdue.

Head coach Drew Roff earned his first official victory as the leader of the Boilermakers.

Goalkeeper Erika Yohn made two saves and earned her first collegiate shutout. Co-captains Kim Love and Melissa Casella went the distance in front of her. Center back Mikayla Lasky left the field for the first time since becoming a starter for the Boilermakers early in the 2013 season. The junior’s consecutive minutes played streak ended at 3,225. But she played the entire second half despite a skinned up and bloody knee.

Hannah Leinert assisted on Purdue’s final two goals in her regular-season team debut. She also had a number of quality scoring chances, most notably getting robbed of a goal on a punch save over the crossbar by Cordoba in the 83rd minute. Cordoba made a similar play on a header by Lasky off a corner kick in the 23rd minute.

Vanessa Korolas setup Williams’ first goal in the sixth minute with a left-to-right cross that led to a one-touch finish point blank.

Leinert’s lead pass down the left flank in the 49th minute set Williams free for a long run with the ball at her feet that became a breakaway as she pulled away from the defender chasing the play. Williams finished with a shot into the short side of the net inside the left post.

Petrina scored with a shot from the right flank that glanced off the hands of Cordoba and into the left side of the net.

Dannah Williams was in the starting lineup as a true freshman Friday.  She joined Erika Arkans, Megan Kaser, Holly Gregory, Korolas, Love and Maddy Williams as active Boilers to start season openers as freshmen.

Petrina logged 31 minutes to lead the reserves. Gabby LaMere, Hannah Mussallem and Petrina were the first subs to enter the game for Purdue.

The Boilermakers return to action Sunday when they host Xavier at 1 p.m.
