Quakers blanked by Wittenberg

September 9, 2011
SPRINGFIELD — When it rains, it pours. For the Wilmington College women’s soccer team, it rained and it poured — figuratively and literally — as the Quakers dropped a 4-0 decision at Wittenberg Wednesday night. Wilmington is now 1-1-2 on the season while Wittenberg improves to 1-2-0. The game went 90 minutes, but the damage was done in 45 as the Tigers built a 3-0 lead at halftime. “We’re obviously disappointed. I thought we were ready for this game,” Wilmington head coach Steve Spirk said. “You can’t give up three goals in the first half and win. I thought we played better in the second half, but it’s tough to get out of a hole that deep.” The game was played under steady rain showers, moisture that flattened the ball’s bounce in the second half. “It rained the whole game and the wind was a big factor. When we finally got the wind in the second half, the field was so saturated that the ball stopped rolling. Usually on turf the ball rolls out of bounds, but the ball didn’t in the second half. It didn’t let us play the type of game that we wanted to play,” Spirk said. Wilmington did create some chances early in the second half, chances that almost opened the door for a sliver of light to creep in. Lauren Mumaw (Dayton/Dayton Christian) and Jenni Marck (Cincinnati/Wyoming) rattled shots off the Wittenberg goal in the 50th minute, but neither attempt crossed the Tigers’ goal line. “That was a nice thing. The team never quit. We applied some pressure. If one of those had gone in, it might have put them on their heels a little bit,” Spirk said. “I’m proud of the effort we showed. We played a lot of young players who did a good job.” The Quakers will travel to Wooster for a 2 p.m. game Sunday.
