Quakers fall to Ohio Wesleyan
September 15, 2011
Opportunities were abundant, but goals were not as Wilmington College lost to Ohio Wesleyan, 3-0, at Charlie Gilhart Field Wednesday night.
The Lady Quakers are now 1-3-2 on the season while the Bishops improve to 3-2-0.
“The bottom line is you have to take advantage of your chances, and we didn’t,” Wilmington head coach Steve Spirk said. “We out-shot them for the game. We out-shot them nearly 3-to-1 in the second half, but we didn’t score. They put theirs in and we didn’t.”
Wilmington controlled play early, but couldn’t find the OWU goal. The Bishops took a 1-0 lead when Jessie Huschart scored in the 12th minute.
The Quakers had good looks at an equalizing goal, but one shot clanged off the crossbar and a point-blank shot whistled high, and the Bishops took their one-goal lead to the break.
The field tilted toward Wilmington in the second half, but the Quakers were unable to hit netting. Two more shots found woodwork and several other good looks went unrewarded.
“We did a nice job of getting players forward, but we just didn’t finish,” Spirk said.
Ohio Wesleyan iced the win with a goal in the 85th minute and tallied a third goal in the final minute of play.
For the game, Wilmington took 24 shots to OWU’s 17. The Quakers owned a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
Wilmington will host Defiance at 5 p.m. Saturday.
“We have to learn what we did well today and we have to get better at finishing the ball. We will work on that the next two days and get ready for Defiance,” Spirk said.
