Ryan Quamme will assume the head coaching position for women’s soccer at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, effective immediately. 

“As we transition forward, we feel we have an outstanding head women’s coach in Ryan Quamme,” said UW-W director of athletics Dr. Paul Plinske.  “He is a gifted individual with great insight of Warhawk soccer. He is a focused leader with great knowledge of the game, regional recruiting ties and the ability to build a strong, fundamentally sound team. Simply put, he’s a great match for our women’s program.”

Quamme has been UW-W’s top assistant for both the men’s and women’s soccer teams the last four years.  He also served as the varsity girls coach at Milton High School last season, when he also began work with the Wisconsin Youth Soccer Association as an Olympic Development Program staff coach.  For eleven years (1999-2010) he worked in the Middleton Yahara Soccer Club, coaching a variety of teams, and in two of those years (2003-2004) he was the girl’s varsity coach at Madison East High School.  His first coaching job was the boy’s U13 and U14 teams for the Verona Area Soccer Club 1997-1999.

“I would like to thank Dr. Plinske for the opportunity to represent the soccer programs at UW-Whitewater,” Quamme said.  “I’m excited about the direction Dr. Plinske and the athletic department have taken, and there is no doubt in my mind that what we are doing is in the best interest for both soccer teams and the student athletes.   I embrace the opportunity to continue to build on the great tradition of both our men’s and women’s programs for years to come.”

Quamme replaces Greg Henschel, who left to take over the women’s program at UW-Milwaukee.  Henschel coached the UW-W men’s team for thirteen years (160-68-20), including all three Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles since the league sponsored the sport for men, and eleven NCAA III tournament appearances.  He added the women’s head coaching duties in 2000 (126-91-13, .548), earning back-to-back WIAC titles in 2010 and 2011, and the school’s first NCAA III berth in 2011 with UW-W advancing to the sweet sixteen of the tourney.

“Coach Henschel did an outstanding job of raising the bar, both competitively and academically, for the men’s and women’s soccer programs at UW-Whitewater. Both team’s surged to the top of the WIAC, experienced great success in the NCAA tournament and performed exceptionally well in the classroom.

"Leading both programs simultaneously was a daunting task, but Greg did it with great effort, enthusiasm and energy," Plinske added. "His opportunity to advance to UW-Milwaukee gives us the chance to pool our resources and strategically align both programs so that we can build off of the tradition of success that Coach Henschel established. We are very excited for Greg and are grateful for his leadership in putting Warhawk soccer on a national map.

“I’d like to thank Greg for the tremendous amount of dedication, pride and time he has provided Warhawk soccer over the years,” Quamme noted.  “It has been an honor to work with him the past four years and I wish him continued success.”

In his new duties Quamme is also the director of soccer operations, overseeing scheduling for both  of the UW-W teams, as well as taking the lead with soccer camps and clinics.  As director of soccer operations he will also be the program manager for the Kachel Multi-Sport Complex, which includes the soccer field and outdoor track and field facility.  Quamme will also serve as the interim men’s head coach for the spring semester while a search is conducted to fill that position.  

“There is no doubt Ryan could have led both men’s and women’s programs here at UW-Whitewater, but our goal is to position ourselves to be regional leaders with a national presence. Our most successful regional competitors have separate men’s and women’s head coaches and we feel that the time is now to build on our soccer program’s strong foundation with a new model. Ryan will be a tremendous asset in the interim while helping lead the men’s program. He will also be a great asset to us while we search for a new head men’s soccer coach.”

Quamme has earned a number of soccer coaching credentials.  He received a United States Soccer Federation D License in 1999, National Soccer Coaches Association of America Youth Diploma in 2001, a NSCAA National Diploma in 2002, a NSCAA Advanced National Diploma in 2004, NSCAA State and Regional Goalkeeper Certificate in 2004, and NSCAA Premier Diploma in 2006.

Quamme earned an associate degree in business management from Madison Area Technical College in 1999, and a bachelor’s degree in organizational management from Ashford University in 2009.
