Queens Extends Playes to Draw with Dominican

October 2, 2013

Sparkill, N.Y. - The Queens College women’s soccer team  extended its unbeaten streak to three games with a 1-1, double overtime draw at Dominican College in Sparkill, New York on Tuesday.  The team is now 6-3-1 on the season.

The Knights dominated every facet of the game, outshooting the Chargers, 19-7 and dominating the corner kicks, 11-5.  In fact, Dominican only had one shot on goal in the entire 110 minutes.

Queens went on the attack early as Bridget Gleason got her head on a ball in the seventh minute and forced Chargers’ goalie Gina Yanette to make a save on the play.  A minute later, Lisa Cassata got her head on it and forced Yanette to parry that shot as well.  Queens would try two more shots before their persistence was rewarded.

In the 33rd minute, Nicolette Scrozzo found Elizabeth Eberhart who put the ball in the back of the net for the game’s first goal.  Queens took a 1-0 lead into the halftime.

Dominican would score the equalizer just after the hour.  Following a foul on QC, Mackenzie Riley flicked one of her four shots on net and found the back of the net to even the score at 1-1.  The would end regulation and head into overtime.

The first overtime saw no scoring, but the Knights had a pair of shots by Kristina Ikonomou and Rebecca Laporte.  A second overtime was needed to determine a winner.

The second overtime saw the Knights go down a player when Laporte took a red card in the 106th minute.  Queens dropped to nine players when Cassata was sent off later in the half.  So, despite being down two players, QC kept Dominican off the scoreboard and earned the 1-1 draw.

The Queens College women’s soccer team returns to action on Saturday, October 5 when they travel to Dobbs Ferry, New York to face Mercy College.  The kickoff with the Mavericks is slated for noon.
