Red Men Thwart Warhawks' Comeback

September 24, 2014

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team scored three unanswered goals to send the game to overtime before losing 4-3 to Carthage College Wednesday night at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. The Warhawks are now 1-1-1 in overtime games this season.

Carthage midfielder Ivan Chavez gave the Red Men a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute after sliding the ball past the Warhawk goalkeeper.  Less than four minutes later Carthage had a 2-0 lead on Michael Dombrowski's sixth goal of the season. Sixteen minutes into the second half the Red Men struck again and the score was a seemingly insurmountable 3-0.

The Warhawks certainly did not "throw-in" the towel. Michael Salm (Grafton, Wis. /Grafton), however, took over with his powerful throw-ins.

Michael Salm (Grafton, Wis. /Grafton) took a throw-in during the 66th minute and threw the ball over the top of the defense to Robert Jones (Glasgow, Scotland/Uddingston Grammar) who centered it to Ty McCoy (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) for his first goal of the season. Seventeen minutes later Salm took another throw-in and tossed it to Justin Stanko (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) who flicked it on to John Gottwald (South Milwaukee, Wis./South Milwaukee) to bring the Warhawks within one at 3-2.

If scoring on two throw-ins wasn't enough, Salm found Isaac Monson (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) on a throw-in in the 88th minute to tie the game and force overtime.

UW-Whitewater's incredible comeback was snuffed out 1:57 into overtime as the Red Men scored to win the game.

Salm finished the game with three assists. The last time a Warhawk player recorded three or more assists in a game was back on October 9, 2005 when Carl Refsell notched four assists in a 6-1 win over Ripon.

The combination of Alex Buchman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford), Josh Rohde (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) and Chris Lucatorto (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) played in goal for the Warhawks.  Each goalkeeper made at least one save with Buchman leading the way with four.

"I'm happy with the guys battling back and scoring two goals in the last ten minutes to tie the game," UW-Whitewater coach Tony Guinn remarked after the game. "Our team showed a lot of character tonight, but I know they are disappointed with the outcome."

The Warhawks will travel to Augustana (Ill.) on Friday for a match at 7 pm in Rock Island, Illinois.
