A tough Husky squad would prove to be too much for the Seattle University women's soccer team Sunday afternoon, as the Redhawks dropped a 3-1 decision to Washington. The game concluded the Husky NIKE Invitational, where both SU and UW went 1-1. Seattle U goalkeeperMadison Goverde (Snohomish, Wash.), who was top notch between the pipes, was named the tournament's Defensive MVP.

The co-captain tallied 11 saves against the Huskies, bringing her weekend total to 17, and the all-tournament nod was the first of the senior keeper's career.

"I think there were some great defenders and some great keepers in this tournament, but Madison has had an outstanding year thus far. I think she is a great leader on-and-off the field, a tremendous competitor and this was well deserved for her," said head coach Julie Woodward.

In the contest, UW took off immediately, sending the ball into the Redhawk half. In the fifth minute Sarah Martinez found Chelsea Archer for the game-opening goal.

Twenty minutes later, Seattle U was able to capitalize on an opportunity deep in the Husky half. UW knocked the ball out of bounds, setting up a Mary Hill (Mercer Island, Wash.) corner kick. Hill sailed in her pass, finding Jordan Salisbury (Federal Way, Wash.) in the middle of the six-yard box. Salisbury landed her head on it and sent in the tying goal. It was her second goal of the season, both headers.

For the remainder of the first half both sides saw multiple opportunities, but the score remained tied heading into the break.

In the second half, the Huskies came out very aggressive. They fired long balls down the field, in hopes of setting up go-ahead goal opportunities. SU managed to hold off their offensive advances, while working to put together a few of their own. Midway through the final half of regulation UW's Martinez took control of the ball on a throw in. She would send in the game-winner to the left side in the 75th minute.

Following Martinez's goal, Washington continued to push a fast paced tempo and controlled the ball primarily in the SU half of the field. They continued to set up several through ball efforts, which the SU defense managed to deflect until the 86th minute. Hillary Zevenbergen intercepted a miscued Redhawk play and sent in UW's final goal of the game in a one-on-one effort with Goverde.

With two minutes left in the game, a Husky player was tripped in the box. Despite giving up a goal minutes before, Goverde was composed and read the penalty kick perfectly preventing SU from going down by a three-goal deficit.

"I think it is a little bit of a letdown, after playing pretty well on Friday. I need to give a lot of credit to Washington. They have played a lot of great opponents and haven't gotten the results they wanted, but we knew that they were a good team coming into this. We had a couple moments during the game, but for the most part they outplayed us today. We need to be much better in the future putting together two games back-to-back in a weekend," concluded Woodward.

Seattle U (4-2) will remain on the road, traveling to Portland, Ore. for Viking Soccer Classic hosted by Portland State. The Redhawks will face Cal Poly in a 3 p.m. game on Friday, Sept. 9, and wrap the weekend up with PSU on Sunday, Sept. 11, in a 2 p.m. match.
