Regis captures RMAC title with 1-0 win over Fort Lewis

October 31, 2011

DENVER, Colo. — Jordan Miller scored in the 72nd minute to lead Regis (14-4-0 overall, 11-3-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) to a 1-0 win over No. 8 Fort Lewis (13-2-3, 10-2-2) today on the Regis Match Pitch to secure the 2011 RMAC regular season championship.

With the win, the Rangers earned the right to host the semifinals and finals of the RMAC postseason tournament next Friday and Sunday.

Regis defender Taylor White set up the game’s only score with a pass into the FLC box. Miller outran her defender and sent her first touch of the pass from White past Skyhawk goalkeeper Amanda Raso into the net.

“Obviously, it was a tough one,” said fifth-year FLC head coach Damian Clarke. “The kids played fantastic. We played extremely well in the first half. We started out strong in the second half as well, but couldn’t score a goal.”

The Skyhawks outshot the Rangers 11-7 overall and 4-1 in shots on target. Regis goalkeeper Nicole Eddings made four saves in the game, though, to keep FLC at bay.

Clarke said his defense played their best game of the year.

The Skyhawks, who would have won their second straight RMAC regular season crown with a win or tie today, slipped to a second place tie with No. 23 Colorado Mines (14-2-2, 10-2-2). By virtue of a win in head-to-head play, the Orediggers earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament and a bye in the quarterfinals.

Fort Lewis will host New Mexico Highlands (10-7-1, 8-5-1) at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Dirks Field in the quarterfinals. Wednesday’s winner will meet Colorado Mines on the Regis Match Pitch on Friday.

“We have to get ready to go to war with Highlands on Wednesday,” said Clarke.
