Retrievers Score First, Fall to UNCW 3-1
Baltimore, Md.— UMBC (0-1-1) got on the board first, but a trio of goals by the Seahawks (2-0-0) gave them a 3-1 win against the Retrievers on Friday night. Senior Christian Morales(Gaithersburg, Md./Frederick) scored the Retriever goal, as UMBC put up ten shots in the contest.
The Retrievers peppered the UNBCW goalkeeperRyan Cretens, outshooting the Seahawks 4-2 in the opening 45 minutes of play.
Morales (Gaithersburg, Md./Frederick) got the scoring started, as he placed a volley from seven yards out past Cretens off the feed from junior Gregg Hauck (Linthicum, Md./North County) in the 67th minute.
However the Seahawks had the answer just minutes later, as Julio Moncada collected the rebounds and put it in the back of the net to tie it at 1-1. Moncada would strike again just two minutes later on the same play to give UNCW a 2-1 lead.
UNCW would put the game away with a goal by David Lozano in the 85th minute to give the Seahawks a 3-1 advantage.
UMBC had ten shots, three on goal, in the contest, including seven corners. Senior Billy Heavner (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) made one stop in net on four Seahawk shots on goal.
The Retrievers are back in action against Northern Illinois on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 4 p.m. at Retriever Soccer Park.
