Rhode Island tops Stony Brook on second half goal

September 1, 2011

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Samantha Leyh's goal in the 68th minute propelled the Rhode Island Rams to a 1-0 victory over Stony Brook at LaValle Stadium on Thursday night. Sophomore Chelsea Morales (Temecula, Calif.) made nine saves in net for the Seawolves.

Rhode Island (2-0-1) generated the only goal of the game off a corner kick by Jennifer Barrientos. As Barrientos played the ball into the box from the left corner, Leyh made a back-post run and volleyed home the game-winner from the right side of the net for her first collegiate goal.

The Seawolves (1-3-0) generated several scoring chances late in the game in an effort to equalize, but could not break through. Stony Brook's best chance came when senior Dana Adamkiewicz (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) played a beautiful ball over the top of the URI defense to junior Sa'sha Kershaw (Baltimore, Md.), who was cutting down the left flank. Kershaw settled the ball at the top of the box and unleashed a quick shot, but it missed the target wide left with three minutes remaining in the second half.

Morales was busy in the Stony Brook net as the Rams attempted 18 shots in the match. The sophomore made a huge stop eight minutes into the game when she denied URI's Madison Vandine on an opportunity in tight. Morales' counterpart, Lindsay Reilly made one stop for the Rams to earn her second clean sheet of the season.

Stony Brook attempted eight shots in the match, led by sophomore Larissa Nysch (Dresher, Pa.) with two. Junior Taryn Schoenbeck (Newark, Del.) produced one of Stony Brook's best chances in the first half with a free kick from 25 yards out, but the shot missed just high of the crossbar.

The Seawolves will continue their three-game homestand on Sunday when they welcome Sacred Heart to LaValle Stadium at 2 p.m.
