Rice Head Coach Honored by Her Alma Mater

July 10, 2015

Rice head soccer coach Nicky Adams, a former collegiate All-America and one of the most decorated players in Texas A&M history, has been selected for induction into her alma mater’s Lettermen’s Association Hall of Fame this fall, it was announced on Friday (July 10).

Adams is one of six former Texas A&M student-athletes to be inducted this year. The ceremony is set for Sept. 18 in College Station.

The former Nicky Thrasher while at Texas A&M from 1997-2001, Adams played forward to help lead the Aggies to three Big 12 Conference titles and to an NCAA Elite Eight appearance. She finished her collegiate career near the top of virtually every offensive category at the school and still holds the A&M record for most career shots with 391. The El Paso, Texas, native is also second in the program’s history for career goals (57), third in points (140) and fifth in assists (26). She twice earned all-region and all-conference honors, as well as NSCAA All-America honors following her senior year.

“I am so incredibly honored to be inducted into the Texas A&M Hall of Fame,” coach Adams said. “The time I spent in Aggieland, as a soccer player and as a student, sculpted me into the person and coach that I am today. I am so fortunate to have had such influential coaches and teammates during my time there. Texas A &M introduced me to so many important relationships, my husband Charlie (a former Texas A&M track & field athlete) and my current Rice assistant coach, Allison Martino (a former A&M soccer player). It opened up so many doors for my career. To this day it is amazing to see how powerful the Aggie Network is.

“I want to congratulate the other inductees,” Adams added. “I am so extremely thankful for this amazing honor.”

The Owls’ head coach has her Rice soccer program headed in the same direction as her own playing career. In 2014 Adams was named the Conference USA Coach of the Year after leading Rice to a league championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Where Adams led Rice to a school record-tying 14 wins last season, the expectations for the Owls’ 2015 season are even higher. The Blue & Gray return 21 letterwinners from a year ago and welcome in a talented new recruiting class. Rice soccer opens the 2015 season at home against Texas A&M on August 21.
