(Kansas City, Mo.) – The Kansas City men’s soccer team got a sudden-death 2-1 winner on a header from sophomore Jordan Rideout just 4:03 into overtime on Saturday against Omaha, virtually clinching a spot in the Summit League Tournament.

The ‘Roos (6-7-2, 4-1 SL) looked strong in the opening half, creating chances and holding most of the possession. They nearly scored on two shots early from senior Mo Ramahi and junior Tom McCarthy, but Omaha (4-9-1, 2-2-1 SL) goalkeeper Matt Grosey was up to the task.

Kansas City had more chances at the end of the period, including a 20-yard rope of a volley from senior David Sarabia that was parried wide by Grosey in the 40^th minute. Three minutes later though, Sarabia would get on the board when he struck a free kick from just outside the box on the right side for a goal. He curled it around the wall in just inside the near post, just beating a diving Grosey. It was the 18^th goal of his career (fourth of the year), tying him for fourth all-time with Hall of Famer Brian Evans (1993-96).

The ‘Roos took that 1-0 lead into the half, and out-shot the Mavericks 7-2 in the stanza. Four of the UMKC attempts were on frame, while UNO had one on goal.

The second stanza played more evenly, but Omaha was the only team to get on the board when Logan Mendez played a through ball down the middle of the defense for Giovanni Giattino, who got behind the ‘Roos defense for a finish from 15 yards out in the 63^rd minute.

The game then went into overtime, which was the third time this season, and for the second time in conference play for UMKC. The ‘Roos didn’t waste any time putting the pressure back on the Mavericks either. McCarthy hit a shot just 2:33 into the period that was saved by Grosey, and Sylvester Yiadom was there for the apparent goal on the rebound, but it was called back due to offsides.

The ‘Roos shook it off though, and got the game-winner in the 95^th minute when Yiadom beat a defender and cut into the right side of the box before crossing it across the six for freshman Broc Cramer. He got a foot on it and the ball set up perfectly for a header from Rideout that found the net. It was Rideout’s second overtime goal of the season, also tallying the game-winner against Fort Wayne on Sept. 22. The goal was his team-leading fifth of the year, and 12^th of his young career.

UMKC out-shot the Mavs by a 13-6 margin in the contest, with starting goalkeeper Connor Sparrow making one save in the first half. Grosey had six saves for UNO.

The Kangaroos will step out of conference play for the final time on Wednesday when they head to Madison for a first-ever meeting with the Wisconsin Badgers at 7:00 p.m.
