Royals Battle Cabrini To 1-1 Draw

August 31, 2013

Playing its second game in warm, muggy conditions in less than 24 hours, The University of Scranton men’s soccer team again battled to a double overtime draw, this time a 1-1 decision against Cabrini College on Saturday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field.

A day after tying Elizabethtown, 2-2, in their season opener, the Royals again rallied from a first-half deficit to forge a draw on a day that saw plenty of sun and humidity and a few players battling cramps.

Senior midfielder Bill McGuiness (Forty Fort, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) scored his first goal of the season for Scranton (0-0-2) when he blasted home a direct kick from about 25 yards out just over eight minutes into the second half. McGuiness had a team-high eight shots as Scranton outshot Cabrini, 31-9.

Freshman goalkeeper Eric Hintz (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) made three saves for Scranton, including one clutch stop in the second overtime. Junior forward Kevin Kozic (Raritan, N.J./Immaculata) and senior midfielder Jimmy Peeler (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) each added four shots for the Royals, who are ranked 10th in the preseason top 25 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Cabrini (0-0-2) got six saves from sophomore goalkeeper R.J. Pino (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown). The Cavaliers scored 10:08 into the contest when senior defender Gabe Kuhn (Fallston, Md./Fallston) delivered a header to the back of the net on a corner kick.

Scranton will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 7, when it hosts St. John Fisher at 4:30 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
