Rutgers Edges Yale 1-0
September 9, 2011
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Yale head coach Rudy Meredith had a very specific purpose in mind when he scheduled a game at Rutgers. He thought it would be good preparation for the Ivy League opener at Princeton later this month. The travel is similar and both are quality opponents. Meredith was pleased with how his team performed against the Scarlet Knights, but he’ll be hoping for a different result against Princeton.
Stefanee Pace scored the only goal of the game in the first half as Rutgers escaped with a 1-0 win on a humid night at Yurcak Field.
“I thought we played very well, especially in the first half,” Meredith said. “This was kind of a dress rehearsal for Princeton. We had to ride the bus for three hours to get to Central New Jersey. Hopefully it will help us get ready for that game.”
Pace’s goal came when she dribbled down the right sideline into the box and floated a ball above Yale goalkeeper Adele Jackson-Gibson’s head that found the bottom left of the net.
“We were a little unlucky on the goal,” Meredith said. “I think she may have been trying to cross it.”
Jackson-Gibson had a strong game in goal for the Bulldogs, finishing with a season-high 10 saves.
“Adele played well,” Meredith said. “I thought our whole defense played well.”
Yale (1-1-2) had a great chance to tie in the second half. Melissa Gavin fired a shot that hit the post. The rebound came to Meredith Speck, but her shot sailed high.
Rutgers (4-2) finished with a 15-5 edge in shots.
Emmy Simpkins made two saves to post the shutout in goal.
“We changed our tactics a bit from the first few games, and I was pleased with the results,” Meredith said.
The Bulldogs are back on the road on Sunday when they travel to St. John’s. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
