FLORENCE, SC – Junior forward Gabe Carneiro scored the match’s first goal and later assisted on another score to lead Palm Beach Atlantic University to a 4-1 non-conference win over Francis Marion University, Saturday afternoon (Oct. 1) in men’s soccer action.

Francis Marion freshman George Kartsimaris tallied his first career goal in the 77th minute as the Patriots avoided the shutout and snapped a 492-minute scoreless drought that stretched over six contests.

The Patriots (1-9-0) will continue a five-match homestand when they entertain Newberry College on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 1 p.m.

Palm Beach Atlantic (5-3-0) outshot FMU 17-11 and held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Carneiro gave the Sailfish a 1-0 lead at 25:14 when he controlled the ball at the top of the 18-yard box, drifted to his right, and let loose with a 19-yard blast into the netting.  Evan Singlar doubled that margin to 2-0 in the 44th minute when he headed in a direct kick from Joel Julio.

Carneiro and Michael Emert both assisted on a goal by Kenny Hogg at 69:54 and Kevin Ireland completed the scoring in the 72nd minute when he combined on a give-and-go score with James Kaim.

Kartsimaris’ goal occurred when Sailfish goalkeeper Steven Bush stopped a shot by FMU’s Igor Souza but was unable to control the ball and Kartsimaris knocked in the rebound.

FMU freshman goalkeeper Nick Lucido registered three saves, while PBAU starter Jonathan Strunk made four stops before Bush replaced him in the 76th minute.  Bush finished with one save.
