Saint Mary's Defeats CSU Bakersfield 2-0

September 30, 2011

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--Jordan Marada scored a pair of goals as Saint Mary’s (9-2-1) defeated CSU Bakersfield (2-7-1) 2-0 Friday night at the Main Soccer Field.

At one point of the first half, CSUB held a 5-1 advantage in shots, but the Gaels took the next six attempts in a row including both goals for the advantage. Marada posted tallies in the 32nd and the 40th minutes.  The best offensive opportunity for the Roadrunners came in the 78th minute when Kassi Massey’s (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) blast from outside the 18 was deflected on goal by Sam Peña (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS). Saint Mary’s goalie Kate Brenot made the save off the deflection to keep the Roadrunners off the scoreboard.

“Its a game where we had good scoring opportunities,” said CSUB head coach Melissa Phillips. “It was a shoulda, woulda, coulda, but we couldn’t put it away. Its a shame that a team we outplayed for quite a bit was able to put goals away on us because individual breakdowns on defense.”

CSUB hosts Fresno State in the annual Valley Cup Sunday at 5 p.m. The Roadrunners will also be hosting the “Beep Beep Bargain Blowout from 12-6 p.m. on Sunday. The cash only sale requires the purchase of gameticket to the match.
