Saints Shutout Saint Peter’s
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Sophomore midfielder David Itoafa scored his second goal of the year as Siena Soccer returned home to shut out Saint Peter’s 1-0 in the Saints’ conference home opener. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Saints which improved to a perfect 4-0 at home.
Following a scoreless first half, the second half turned physical as the teams jockeyed for an advantage. A combined 28 fouls where whistled in the final stanza alone and one set up the game-winner.
Taking a free kick just five yards outside the top right of the box, Itoafa curled his attempt around the wall and just inside the far post to put the Saints’ (6-5, 1-1) ahead in the 51st minute.
Saint Peter’s (2-7, 0-1) out-shot the Saints 15-6, but freshman keeper Josh Weiss made seven saves to post his third clean sheet of the season. David Giddings stopped two shots for the Peacocks.
The win was the fourth in a row in Loudonville over Saint Peter’s for the Saints which were returning home following a program record six-match road trip and playing at Siena Turf Field for the first time in 25 days.
Siena’s homecoming will be short-lived however as the squad heads back on the road for the next two, concluding a grueling stretch where the Saints play eight of nine away from home. Siena heads to Western New York to face Niagara Wednesday at 4 p.m.
