San Diego women fall to Santa Clara
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The University of San Diego women’s soccer team began West Coast Conference play with a 1-0 loss to No. 13 Santa Clara University Sunday afternoon.
The Broncos (8-3-2, 1-0-0 WCC) scored the matches lone goal in the 50th minute of action Sarah Jackson fired off a shot that was saved by USD’s Courtney Parsons, but the ball fell to the feet of Anessa Patton who was able to score the goal.
San Diego (7-5-2, 0-1-0 WCC) had its scoring opportunities, as the match was almost evenly played with the Broncos holding a slight 15-12 edge in shots, and the Toreros had a decisive 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. One of USD’s scoring opportunities came in the fourth minute, as Stephanie Ochs rocketed off a shot, that was saved by the SCU goalkeeper.
Ochs led the team’s offensive attack as she had a team-leading three shots, and both Addie Cartan and Elissa Magracia tallied a pair of shots a piece.
Parsons was saddled with the loss in goal for USD as she allowed one goal and recorded five saves. Her counterpart, Bianca Henninger, was credited with the win as she allowed no goals and recorded three saves.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday as they travel to play the University of San Francisco in a 7 p.m. WCC match.
