(Las Vegas) – San Francisco men’s soccer scored to unanswered second half goals to seize a 2-1 come-from-behind victory at UNLV on day one of the 2011 Nike UNLV Invitational Friday night at Peter Johann Field. The Dons (1-3-0) put together a complete 90 minutes and broke through for their inaugural victory of the season at the expense of the Rebels (1-3-0).

Trailing 1-0 with the second half winding down, San Francisco scored a pair of goals in nine minutes from a pair of freshmen strikers. Sixto Porras provided the equalizer in the 77th minute off a feed from junior defender Jorge Martinez. Miguel Aguilar tallied the game-winner on a breakaway from 10 yards in the 86th minute.

“We battled for 90 minutes tonight,” USF head coach Erik Visser said. “I’m really happy for them. We went down 1-0 and the kids could have easily caved in, but I give them a lot of credit because everybody contributed and they battled hard and kept going forward as we completely dominated the opponent.”

San Francisco gave up one chance to UNLV in the opening period and the Rebels did not waste it as Robert Garcia fired a shot into the top right corner off a cross from Salvador Bernal in the 21st minute.

“I was pleased with the way we kept moving forward,” Visser said. We tied the game on a great goal by Porras and instead of sitting back, the kids were determined to finish up the game with a win culminated with a final goal from Miguel Aguilar. We defended really well.”

San Francisco started nine underclassmen, including five freshmen.

USF held a 10-6 shot advantage, including a commanding 8-3 edge in the second half. Sophomore midfielder Mauricio Diaz De Leon fired a match-high five shots.

Junior goalkeeper Brendan Roslund (1-2-0) collected the victory and made one save on six shots. Ryan Harding suffered the loss for the Rebels and made three saves.

San Francisco concludes tournament play Sunday morning when it takes on CSU Fullerton. Match time against the Titans is set for 10:30 AM at Peter Johann Field.
