FLORENCE, S.C. – Junior forward Levin Sandmann scored two goals, including the match-winner with  8:29 remaining, to lift Francis Marion University to a 2-1 win over Barton College, Wednesday night (Sept. 6) in men’s college soccer action.

Francis Marion (2-1-0) moved over the .500 mark with the rain-soaked win, while the Bulldogs fall to 1-1-0. 

The Patriots will host Newberry College on Saturday evening at 7 p.m on Hartzler Field.

In the opening 10 minutes, FMU had several scoring opportunities.  Freshman midfielder Jonas Dovland forced a quick save by Barton goalkeeper Jens Madsen Hordvik at the 1:54 mark and three minutes later sophomore Jordan Dechere sent a cross into the box that junior forward Oliver Drakenhammar headed off the crossbar.  At the 7:16 mark, Sandmann was denied on a penalty kick by Hordvik leaving the match scoreless.

However, the reigning Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year made a Dechere cross count as Sandmann put the ball into the back of the net off a header in the 22nd minute. Sophomore midfielder Julian Kersting started the sequence with a nicely played ball out to Dechere on the left wing.

With the time at 57:02, Barton’s Tolly Beatson placed a corner kick perfectly inside the 6-yard box where Cooper Dean finished off the equalizing score.

Sandmann put the Patriots back on-top with a goal assisted by senior Gaspard Mianne and sophomore Colin McPartlin.  McPartlin settled a Barton clearance with a one-touch pass to Mianne, who then dribbled up the field before sliding a through ball to Sandmann for a 10-yard shot. 

Sandmann has a team-high four goals on the 2017 season. 

FMU freshman goalkeeper Raul Guillamon Bejar finished with four saves in his first start of the campaign, whereas Hordvik saved six shots.

The Patriots outshot the Bulldogs 19-12, with Barton having seven corner kicks to Francis Marion’s two.
