HAVERFORD, Pa. – In a game delayed for more than two hours that finished in near darkness, The University of Scranton men’s soccer team fell to Rutgers-Newark, 4-1, on Saturday in the Jimmy Mills Tournament at Haverford College.

The Royals, who entered the game ranked No. 18 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25, received a goal from senior midfielder Rich Loeffler (Matawan, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) in the 50th minute. The goal was his second of the season and ninth of his career.

Loeffler’s goal gave Scranton (2-1) a 1-0 lead, but Rutgers-Newark (2-2) stormed back with four straight goals, tying the match in the 64th minute, taking the lead in the 73rd, and putting the game away with two goals in the final six minutes.

The Scarlett Raiders outshot Scranton, 15-8, and had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Senior forward Kevin Kozic (Raritan, N.J./Immaculata) and sophomore midfielder Tim DiBisceglie (Mine Hill, N.J./Gill St. Bernard’s) led the Royals with two shots each.

The game was delayed midway through the first half for more than two hours due to severe weather. The delay forced the game to end shortly after 7:30 p.m. with the daylight dwindling to near darkness.

Scranton will look to rebound on Sunday when they take on William Paterson in the second and final day of action in the Jimmy Mills tournament at Haverford.
