Scranton Opens Conference Play With Victory
SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Four different players scored as The University of Scranton women’s soccer team opened Landmark Conference play with a 4-0 victory at Susquehanna on Saturday afternoon at Sassafras Field.
Senior forward Katie O’Hanlon (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy), junior forwards Erin Allen (Syosset, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) and Sarah Andrews (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood), and sophomore forward Christina Akalski (Long Beach, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) each scored goals for the Royals (5-3-1, 1-0 Landmark).
Allen put the Royals ahead in the 34th minute when she took a pass from junior midfielder Michaela Arbus (Pequannock, N.J./DePaul Catholic) and scored from in close for her second goal of the season. Arbus picked up her first assist of the season.
After taking that 1-0 lead into halftime, Scranton put the game away with three goals in a 14-minute span midway through the second half. Akalski got the surge going when she scored in the 61st minute off an assist by Andrews. It was Akalski’s second goal of the season and ninth of her career.
Andrews scored a little over four minutes later when she gained control of a rebound on a shot that was saved and scored her fourth goal of the season. The earlier assist was her first of the season.
O’Hanlon capped the scoring in the 74th minute when she converted off a feed from senior forward Kelsey O’Kane (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara). The goal was the first of O’Hanlon’s career while O’Kane picked up her first assist of the season.
Scranton held a 21-2 advantage in shots over Susquehanna (3-6-1, 0-1), and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. Senior midfielder Ellen Walker (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) led the Royals with six shots.
The Royals are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 1, when they travel to Wilkes-Barre, Pa. to take on Wilkes at 4 p.m.
