LARAMIE, Wyo. – San Diego State was doomed by two late goals in a 2-1 loss at Wyoming Sunday afternoon. The decision snaps SDSU’s 14-game Mountain West regular-season winning streak and drops it into a first-place tie in the league. The Aztecs fall to 6-6-2 (4-1 MW), while the Cowgirls improve to 6-8-1 (3-2 MW).

 

SDSU looked poised to leave Laramie with a win as it carried a 1-0 lead into the 73^rd minute.  An Aztec foul, however, handed Wyoming a free-kick opportunity and the Cowgirls took full advantage. Loren Mahoney’s attempt sailed over the outstretched Melanie Vaughn and all of a sudden the score was tied with just over 17 minutes to play.

 

An identical sequence occurred less than three minutes later in the 76^th minute when San Diego State was whistled for another foul setting up another free kick. Mahoney duplicated her effort, this time from 25 yards, as her shot went over the leaping Vaughn, hit the crossbar and made its way past the goal line to propel Wyoming to a 2-1 lead.

 

Facing its first deficit in Mountain West regular-season play since Oct. 19, 2012, in the fifth minute against Wyoming, San Diego State tried to stage a comeback. Unfortunately for the Aztecs, the Cowgirls were able to stop and clear every SDSU attempt en route to the win.

 

San Diego State found itself in a position to post its 15^th straight regular-season conference win thanks to Carli Johnson. The senior defender scored off a corner kick situation in the 33^rd minute when she headed a ball from classmate Sophie Metz. For Johnson, it was her third goal of the year and Metz’s first assist of 2013.

 

With the exception of the final score, the game was nearly equal. Each team attempted 10 shots and had six shots on goal. The Aztecs enjoyed a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks and the saves count was 5-4 in favor of Wyoming.

 

Hannah Keane shared game-high honors with Wyoming’s Kristin Howard as each attempted three shots. Evie Millynn and Carli Johnson, meanwhile, recorded two shots apiece.

 

The Aztecs will look to get back into the winning column on Friday, Oct. 18, when they play host to UNLV at SDSU Sports Deck, a venue where SDSU is 14-0-1 in its last 15 regular-season games vs. unranked foes. First tap between the Aztecs and Rebels is set for 7 p.m. PT and the game will be streamed live on the Mountain West Network.
