Two early goals were too much to overcome, as the Golden Gophers ran away from the Jackrabbits, 5-0…

No. 22 Minnesota did not waste time, scoring six minutes into the first half. And the Golden Gophers did not look back…

Fifteen minutes later, the Golden Gophers added another goal, making the score, 2-0…

The South Dakota State defense held for the remainder of the half, but had to press and play “catch up” for the remainder of the game.

No. 22 Minnesota controlled the ball in the first half, recording 11 shots to one shot for the Jackrabbits. Six of the Golden Gophers’ shots were on goal, while SDSU had none. Minnesota took three corner kicks, while SDSU also had none.

Senior goalkeeper Kat Donovan, making her second consecutive start for the Jackrabbits, made four first-half saves. She finished the game with five saves.

The second half did not go well for the Jacks, as the nationally-ranked Gophers hit its stride, scoring three goals in a 14-minute span. The first of these came at 48:59, and made the score 3-0. Before all was said and done, Minnesota led SDSU, 5-0.

South Dakota State, finding itself down by a handful of goals, took the opportunity to get some non-starters playing time. The Jacks played 19 players,

The Jackrabbits did not give up, registering its first corner kick with 3:13 left in the game.

As the second half came to a close, senior midfielder Danielle Neuhalfen mustered one final effort with a shot on goal, which was saved by the Golden Gophers’ goalkeeper. The shot was the only shot on goal for SDSU.

The only other shot came off the foot of senior forward Kelsey Ferguson.

Minnesota outshot the Jackrabbits 17-2, including a 10-1 shot on goal advantage.

South Dakota State falls to 0-6-1 against Minnesota all-time.

Next up for the Jackrabbits is a trip to Dekalb, Ill., to face Northern Illinois and Western Michigan. The game against Western Michigan is the only neutral-site game this season for SDSU.

The Jacks lead the all-time series with NIU 1-0-0. The game against WMU is the first in school history.

Northern Illinois opened the 2011 season with a 2-0 loss to Iowa State in Ames, Iowa. The game with SDSU serves as the Huskies’ regular season home opener on Friday, Aug. 26. The Huskies will then host North Dakota on Sunday, Aug. 28.

Western Michigan dropped a 1-0 decision at No. 12 Marquette in Milwaukee, Wis. The Broncos face North Dakota on Friday, Aug. 26, before facing SDSU on Sunday, Aug. 28.
