SAN DIEGO – San Diego State shut down San José State in every facet of the game en route to a 2-0 victory on a hot Sunday afternoon at SDSU Sports Deck. The Aztecs’ season-high second consecutive win lifts their record to 4-5-2 (2-0 Mountain West). The Spartans, meanwhile, drop to 1-9 (0-2 MW).

 

The Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week, Hannah Keane, stayed as hot as the weather was, scoring for the fourth straight game. On this day, the junior from Sacramento wasted little time in helping SDSU get on the scoreboard. In the 11^th minute, Kelsey Booth blasted two shots in a row with the second carom going to Keane, who calmly tickled the twine to post her sixth goal in her last four games.

 

Playing with the an early lead, San Diego State created a ton of scoring chances the rest of the first half, but was unsuccessful. At the halftime horn, the Aztecs enjoyed a 19-3 advantage in shots, including 10 that came on goal.

 

In the second period, it was all SDSU. The preseason and defending Mountain West champions completely took the Spartans out of their game, but were still nursing a 1-0 lead 13 minutes into the final stanza. All of that changed in the 59^th minute when Haley Locker found herself in space and came into the box where she was taken down by SJSU goalkeeper Zoe Makrigiannis, who received a red card. Victoria Barba took the ensuing penalty kick and converted to give the Aztecs some breathing room.

 

San Diego State kept the pressure on the Spartans offensively and its defense defused any opportunity SJSU had down the stretch as the Aztecs beat their 11^th straight Mountain West foe and won for the eighth time at home in as many outings vs. conference members.

 

Melanie Vaughn, who earned the start at goalkeeper, pocketed her fourth shutout of the season and was never tested in net.

 

SDSU finished the afternoon by outshooting San José State, 31-3, and did not allow the Spartans to attempt a shot in the final 45 minutes. The Aztecs also took eight corner kicks compared to SJSU’s one.

 

Eleven Aztecs attempted at least one shot with Keane attempting a career-high nine. Booth added five shots and an assist, and Barba took four rips with three coming on net.

 

San Diego State will look to keep its perfect MW record intact Friday, Oct. 4, when Colorado State visits Montezuma Mesa. First tap is set for 7 p.m. PT and admission is free.
