Seahawks Drop Season Opener, 2-0, To Army
Staten Island, NY – The Wagner women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Army West Point in the season opener at Hameline Field on Friday evening.
The Seahawks (0-1) and Black Knights (1-0) were tied after 45 minutes of action. The Green & White had a chance in the 30th minute as freshman forward Luisa Barone was able to put the ball on goal but was denied by keeper, Sydney Cassalia.
Before the intermission, senior captain Peyton Beck was able to rocket a shot but was also denied by the Army netminder as the teams entered the break tied at 0-0.
The visiting Cadets struck for the game's first tally in the 65th as Erynn Johns was able to get one pass Seahawk senior goalkeeper, Katie Viscardi, after receiving the ball from a free kick from Cassalia.
A little over four minutes later in the stanza, the Black Knights went ahead by two as Lauren Stovar delivered a low kick off a corner kick from Sydney Witham in giving the visitors a two-goal advantage.
Wagner had a chance late in the contest to score its first goal of the 2018 campaign as sophomore midfielder Julia Fitzsimmons blasted a shot that was turned aside by Cassalia in preserving the shutout.
Army held an 8-4 advantage on shots while Viscardi was credited with five saves in this evening's contest. Tonight's contest marked just the second-ever meeting between the two schools, the first coming back in in 1999.
Wagner remains home as the Seahawks return to the pitch on Tuesday, August 21 as they will square off against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) members, Rider, at 7:00 p.m. from Hameline Field. The contest will be streamed live on NEC Front Row.
