Seahawks Tie LIU Brooklyn

October 1, 2017

Staten Island, NY – Backed by a tough defensive performance, the Wagner College women's soccer team earned a 0-0 tie against LIU Brooklyn in its first Northeast Conference (NEC) matchup of the season.

With today's result, the Seahawks now sit at 3-5-3 overall on the season and 0-0-1 in the NEC, while the Blackbirds move to 3-6-2 for the year, including a 1-0-1 conference record.

Both teams started off aggressively on offense, as the two sides combined for seven shots on goal in the first period. The Seahawks had their first scoring chance of the contest seven minutes into the game, as sophomore Maria Nunez (East Greenwich, RI / East Greenwich) was on the receiving end of a dangerous cross, but missed just wide.

Twenty minutes into the game, freshman Madison Starr (New Canaan, CT / New Canaan) delivered the second dangerous chance for the Green and White, but her shot from long distance, aimed for the top corner, was saved.

After the halftime whistle, both teams adjusted defensively as scoring chances for both sides were scarce throughout the second period. Starr led Wagner with two attempts on goal, while Nunez, as well as juniors Maria D'Amico (Freehold, NJ / Freehold Township) and Sandra Battista (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy), contributed two shots apiece.

With the score still knotted up at 0-0, the game went into overtime, where the Seahawks had their best scoring opportunity on a dangerous free kick from long range by sophomore defender Autumn Clark (Fort Lauderdale, FL / Pine Crest Prep), but her attempt was saved as well.

Sophomore goalkeeper Delaney Beck (Bakersfield, CA / Garces Memorial) led Wagner with 11 saves, as the Blackbirds also hit aluminum three times throughout the contest, including on a breakaway chance in the first overtime period.

Wagner will be back in action next Friday, October 6, when the Seahawks travel to Fairleigh Dickinson University for their second NEC game, starting at 7:00 p.m..
