Seattle U Men’s Soccer Shutout at Home by Gonzaga
Despite tallying an 18-9 shot advantage, the Seattle University men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to Gonzaga Wednesday afternoon at Championship Field. The Redhawks put together several skillful runs deep into the GU half, but it would be defensive miscues that would hand Seattle U their second loss of the season.
The game opened with SU controlling possession and setting the pace of play. They created several runs down the flank, but were unable to finish on their opportunities and strike first.
After unsuccessful attempts on goal by the Redhawks, Gonzaga had their first opening. Nick Hamer sent in a cross from outside the box to Colin Flynn. Flynn managed to get open and his head on it to send in the eventual game-winner in the 42nd minute.
Gonzaga would add twice to their lead in the second half, with Flynn scoring again off a deflection in the 59th minute. N. Hamer added the final goal off a pass from Zach Hamer in the 69th minute from the top of the 18-yard box.
For Seattle U, forward Mikey Ramos (Spokane Valley, Wash.) and midfielder Ben Striar (Portland, Ore.) tirelessly worked to push the ball down the lane and into the GU box. Striar sent in several passes to Ramos around the box, setting up offensive opportunities for SU; however a solid defensive game from the Bulldogs prevented openings that the Redhawks could take advantage of. Ramos tallied five shots, with three landing on target, while Striar had four shots in the game.
Seattle U (1-2-2) will have some time off before heading to Southern California for a pair of matches. The Redhawks will face UCLA on Friday, Sept. 23, at 5 p.m., before traveling to Cal State Northridge on Sunday, Sept. 25, for an 11 a.m. match.
