After battling on the road in their first 10 games, the Seattle University women's soccer team hosted their season home opener Friday afternoon at Championship Field in front of a capacity crowd of 745. The Redhawks extended their winning streak to four, as they shutout the University of San Francisco, 1-0. With the win, SU improved their overall record to 8-3 on the year, while USF dropped to 3-7.

"I thought we had a fairly decent game. I thought we could have been more opportunistic, we had 22 shots in the game and only five of them were on goal. I thought we created some really great chances, but our shots went just left and right (of goal) a couple times. I am impressed with our efforts, but the end result I am not super pleased with," said head coach Julie Woodward.

In the seventh minute the Redhawks early offensive efforts were rewarded, as Megan Daniels (Lake Forest, Calif.) drove the ball near the goal line. She sent in a shot from the far side that bent in towards the USF goalkeeper Heather Haney. The ball ended up deflecting off Haney to get SU on the board immediately. While Daniels strong offensive effort set up the goal, it was considered an own goal from USF because Haney's touch deflected it directly into the goal.

"Megan did do well to create that own goal, but we need to just be more opportunistic in the future," concluded Woodward.

SU outshot USF 21-7, with five shots landing on target.

Throughout the game, the Redhawks would fire off a series of shots, but could not find the back of the net. Sophomore Ava Ames (Seattle, Wash.) was a major offensive force for Seattle U, creating several scoring opportunities. She tallied a game-high six shots, with two on frame; however a series of them went just above the crossbar.

With 11:16 remaining in regulation, SU had their best chance to add to their lead when freshmanTaylor Ritzman (Holladay, Utah) received a through ball outside the USF 18-yard box. She was able to glide past the Don defender to send an open shot that went just wide of the far post.

The Seattle U defense played well as a unit in the match, with Mary Hill (Mercer Island, Wash.) andJordan Salisbury (Federal Way, Wash.) making several great stops to prevent USF from sending in shots on target.

The Redhawks will remain at home for a series of three more games, beginning with Gonzaga on Friday, Sept. 30 at 4 p.m. Two days later, SU will host Boise State in a 1 p.m. match.
