Despite their best efforts, the Seattle University women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision at Washington State Sunday afternoon in Pullman, Wash. A first half Cougar goal would prove to be the difference maker and hand SU their first loss of the season.

At 16:30 Eileen Maes sent in a long ball to Brandi Vega, who shot in the game-winner through the left side of the box.

Following the Cougar goal, the Redhawk defense held off a strong WSU attack. Goalkeeper Madison Goverde (Snohomish, Wash.) tallied five saves in the game and has only conceded a pair of goals in four matches played this year.

 "We saw glimpses of some good things throughout the game," said head coach Julie Woodward. "Overall we were not good enough on the day for the full 90 minutes of play."

The Redhawks fought to the wire to equalize the game and send it into extra periods. With 12 seconds left in the contest there was a scramble in the Washington State box. Junior Taylor Bolibol(Woodinville, Wash.) managed to get control of the ball and sailed in a shot that was just high and deflected off the crossbar in SU's final offensive attempt.

Seattle U (3-1) will remain on the road for their next pair of matches, but will play in familiar territory. The Redhawks will face a pair of nationally ranked squads in the University of Portland on Friday, Sept. 2, and cross-town rival the University of Washington on Sunday, Sept. 4. Both games are part of the Husky NIKE Invitational and will be played at UW's Husky Soccer Stadium.
