#Seawolves clipped by UMass Lowell 2-1

October 18, 2014

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Favio Sbarra's (Caracas, Venezuela) second goal of the season staked the #Seawolves to a 1-0 lead, but the UMass Lowell River Hawks would net two goals late in the first half to earn a 2-1 victory.

Goal Recaps

  • Sbarra received a pass from freshman Thibault Duval (Grace Hollogne, Belgium) and beat UMass Lowell's Austin Kroll with a dipping rocket from 25 yards out to give the #Seawolves an early lead. Junior Alejandro Fritz (Budapest, Hungary) was also credited with an assist on the play.
  • UMass Lowell's Wuilito Fernandes tied the game at one when he took advantage of a miscommunication between redshirt freshman goalkeepr Tom McMahon and his defender to bury the ball into the back of the net.
  • Carlos Ruiz scored the game-winner with 43 seconds remaining in the first half, smashing a free kick from 30 yards out into the near post's top corner.

Highlights

  • Stony Brook came out strong to start the second half, nearly scoring three times in a span of five minutes. The first opportunity came to fruition when junior Martin Giordano (Weston, Fla.) flicked a corner kick to the far post but Kroll sprawled to make a save.
  • Redshirt freshman Fernando Wadskier (Caracas, Venezuela)  was next to break through the River Hawks defense, beating a defender and firing a hard shot that just missed wide of the near post.
  • Two minutes later Duval spun and curled a shot from the top of the box to the far post that narrowly missed.

Notes

  • The River Hawks outshot Stony Brook 18-15 for the match and 10-7 in shots on goal.
  • Wadskier and Giordano led the Seawolves with four shots apiece. Giordano and Sbarra each had two shots on goal.
  • McMahon made eight saves for the match.
  • Sbarra has scored in his last two matches at LaValle Stadium.
