#Seawolves defeat Delaware St. 1-0

August 24, 2014

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Freshman Maddie Good's (Palmyra, Pa.) first career goal broke a scoreless tie in the 75th minute to give the #Seawolves their first victory of the year in their home opener against Delaware State, 1-0.

Goal Recap

  • Despite outshooting Delaware State 22-6 for the game, the Seawolves didn't get on the board until the 76th minute when Good received a throw-in from junior Tessa Devereaux (Fayetteville, N.Y.), fought off a defender and beat the goalkeeper with a screamer over her shoulder and under the crossbar.

Game Highlights

  • On two second-half occassions redshirt junior Regan Bosnyak (West Hartford, Conn.) rose over the Hornet defense to get her head on corner kicks, but both times the ball sailed tantilizingly wide.
  • Good nearly put the hosts on top sooner when the Seawolves linked for some nice build-up play but the freshman couldn't quite redirect a whipped in cross from sophomore Maxie New (Clayton, N.J.).
  • Despite being held at bay relatively the entire match, Delaware State nearly equalized in the 86th minute when the ball fell to Franny Farella at the penalty spot but her snatching effort whizzed high.

Notes

  • Stony Brook held a decisive advantage in shots (22-6) and shots on goal (7-1).
  • Devereaux led all players with five shots followed closely by senior Shannon Grogan (Eastampton, N.J.) and Bosnyak with four each.
  • Redshirt senior Ashley Castanio (Oceanside, N.Y.) notched her tenth career shutout in goal for the Seawolves.
  • This go-around the mentor got the best of her protege. For the first time in her career, head coach Sue Ryan opposed one of her former players on the bench in an all-Division I game. Kerri Scroope, head coach of Delaware State played for Ryan at Stony Brook in the late 90's and gave her former coach all she could handle in her return to LaValle Stadium.
  • With the win Stony Brook improved to 3-0-1 in their last four home openers at Lavalle Stadium
