Seawolves rally to defeat Iona 2-1 in opener

August 26, 2011

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Junior Sa'sha Kershaw (Baltimore, Md.) scored the game-winning goal and added an assist as the Stony Brook women's soccer team came from behind to knock off Iona, 2-1, on Monday at LaValle Stadium. Sophomore Caitlin Pfeiffer (Holland, N.Y.) also netted a goal for Stony Brook, which scored twice in a span of 3:35 in the second half.

The Seawolves outshot the Gaels (0-2-0) by a 17-6 margin and enjoyed the majority of possession throughout the match. Despite dominating from a statistical standpoint, Stony Brook found itself behind early when Iona's Kerrie Deignan produced a wonder strike from well outside the box in the 21st minute. Deignan took a feed from Nicole Paulucci and curled a left-footed shot just inside the left post to push the visitors in front.

Stony Brook battled back in the second half and equalized when Pfeiffer slotted a shot inside the near post from ten yards out on the left wing. Kershaw provided the service to set up the goal, Pfeiffer's first as a Seawolf, at the 55:11 mark.

The Seawolves continued to press and found another breakthrough just over three minutes later. Junior Taryn Schoenbeck (Newark, Del.) cut open the Iona defense with a beautiful through-ball down the middle, unleashing Kershaw free on goal. The junior calmly lured the Iona keeper out, before tucking the ball inside the right post to put Stony Brook ahead for good. The goal was Kershaw's first-career game-winner and her 10th overall in a Seawolves' uniform.

Sophomore Chelsea Morales (Temecula, Calif.) earned the victory with two saves, while Iona's Jacquelyn Gates took the loss despite making nine stops.

The Seawolves will return to action on Friday, Aug. 26 when they take on Delaware at 5 p.m. at the James Madison Tournament in Harrisonburg, Va. Stony Brook will also face the host Dukes on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
