#Seawolves season ends in penalty kicks

November 8, 2014

Vestal, N.Y. - The #Seawolves fought neck and neck with Binghamton in the America East quarterfinal Saturday night but lost in the sixth round of penalty kicks. Stony Brook held a 1-0 lead late in the second half behind a goal from senior Keith McKenna (Great River, N.Y.) before the Bearcats tied the game in the 79th minute.

Goal Recaps

  • McKenna's goal in the 47th minute was made possible because of a beautiful free kick from freshman Thibault Duval (Grace Hollogne, Belgium). His delivery found McKenna's head for the game's first goal.
  • The Seawolves kept the Bearcats at bay the entire night until the 79th minute when Tucker Sandercock looped a header over redshirt freshman Tom McMahon (Nassau Bay, Texas).

Highlights

  • Redshirt freshman Fernando Wadskier (Caracas, Venezuela) nearly gave the Seawolves the lead in the first half when he dribbled laterally across the box and hit a shot back against the grain but it was pulled slightly wide of the far post.
  • In the first overtime Stony Brook came within inches of advancing to the semifinals. Favio Sbarra (Caracas, Venezuela) played a give-and-go on the top of the box to get in behind the Binghamton defense. The sophomore's shot was directly at the Binghamton goalie but a juicy rebound fell to Wadskier. He smashed a shot that hit the inside of the post and squirted across the face of goal without crossing the goal line.

Shootout Recap

Stony Brook converted three of its six penalty kick attempts in the shootout. Martin Giordano (Weston, Fla.), Vince Erdei (Budapest, Hungary) and Mario Mesen (San Jose, Costa Rica) were the shooters to find the back of the net. McMahon made two critical saves in the fourth and fifth rounds to keep Stony Brook's hopes alive but he couldn't come up with a third straight save and the game ended after six shooters.

Notes

  • Binghamton outshot Stony Brook 11-9 but the Seawolves held a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Shots were seven apiece in regulation but the Bearcats held a 4-2 edge in the overtime periods.
  • Wadskier led Stony Brook with three shots.
