#Seawolves take down Seton Hall 2-1

September 4, 2014

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The #Seawolves (2-3) opened up a 2-0 lead then hung on for a big 2-1 victory over Seton Hall (1-4) on Thursday night at Lavalle Stadium. With the win, Stony Brook improves its home record to 2-0.

Ryan’s Reaction

"It was good to be home," Ryan said. "I like the fact that our team played hard against a very good Seton Hall team. Sometimes you have to find ways to grind out results and tonight we found a way to win."

Goal Recaps

  • Sophomore Leah Yurko (Cumberland, Md.) got the Seawolves on the board in the sixth minute when she took advantage of an errant clearing attempt. Freshman Maddie Good (Palmyra, Pa.) started the play with a cross to the top of the box, allowing Yurko to beat a defender and lace the ball into the side netting just inside the far post for her first goal of the year.
  • Junior Tessa Devereaux (Fayetteville, N.Y.) padded the lead to two goals after some nifty combination play from Stony Brook. Senior Megan Rea (East Haven, Conn.) started the counter attack when she threaded a ball to Yurk down the right. Yurko then preceded to pick out redshirt sophomore Raven Edwards (West Orange, N.J.) with a precise cross. Edwards headed the ball off the back of a defender, but after a scramble, the ball fell to Devereaux who made no mistake with the opportunity.
  • The Pirates gave the Seawolves a scare when they pulled within a goal in the 67th minute. A Seton Hall free kick was redirected by a Stony Brook defender onto goal. Redshirt senior Ashley Castanio (Oceanside, N.Y.) made one of her many fantastic saves but the ball was poked in on Sarah Cortes’s follow-up effort.

Highlights

  • Senior Shannon Grogan (Eastampton, N.J.) almost netted her first goal of the year when she streaked onto a through ball from sophomore Maxie New (Clayton, N.J.) but her attempt to round the keeper on the dribble was unsuccessful.
  • Castanio made two terrific saves in the contest. The first came in the first half when she dove to her left to deny a Pirate bid on goal and the other when she dove over her shoulder to tip a ball off the crossbar and out for a corner kick.

Notes

  • The win improved the Seawolves to 11-1 in their last 12 games at LaValle Stadium.
  • Castanio set a new season-high with 10 stops in net for Stony Brook.
  • The Pirates upped the pressure after falling behind by two goals. At the time of Devereaux's goal the shots were even at eight apiece but from that point on Seton Hall reeled off 14 of the game's final 15 shots.
