Second half goals sink #Seawolves

August 31, 2014

Staten Island, N.Y. – The Wagner Seahawks (3-1) used two second half goals and some solid goalkeeping to down the #Seawolves (1-3) on Sunday 2-0.

Ryan’s Reaction

"We had the better of the play in the first half and we just couldn't find a way put it in the back of the net," said Ryan. "At the end of the day when you play against a hard, scrappy team like Wagner, you have to capitalize on your chances. I was pleased with some individual performances and I think we are progressing as a team but now we have to find ways to win those types of games."

Goal Recap

  • 54th minute: Samanth Jensen converted a rebound opportunity after redshirt senior goalkeeper Ashley Castanio and a Wagner player collided spilling the ball onto Jensen’s path.
  • 76th minute: Daniella Davis provided a much needed insurance goal beating Castanio with a shot that snuck just inside the far post

Highlights

  • Senior Shannon Grogan (Eastampton, N.J.) was active all day up front. Her best chance came midway through the first half when she received the ball after making a peeled run across the back four but her shot was straight at the keeper.
  • Trailing 1-0, sophomore Leah Yurko (Cumberland, Md.) went on a terrific run down the right side, beating two defenders in the process. She made the right decision to pick out junior Tessa Devereaux (Fayetteville, N.Y.) with a cut back ball at the penalty spot but the shot was put over the bar.

Notes

  • Shots were even at 15 with Stony Brook holding a slight edge in shots on goal 9-7. The Seawolves outshot Wagner 11-4 in the first half but that margin was flipped in the Seahawks favor in the second 45.
  • Grogan had a team-high four shots and three shots on goal.
