October 21, 2017

FLORENCE, SC – Georgia Southwestern State University twice rallied from a one-goal deficit and then took the lead on a 72nd-minute own goal giving the Hurricanes a 3-2 victory Saturday night (Oct. 21) over Francis Marion University in Peach Belt Conference men’s soccer action.

The Patriots fall to 6-8-0 overall and 1-5-0 in the PBC, while the Hurricanes improve to 5-8-1 and 1-4-0 on the campaign.

FMU will play its final regular-season match on Wednesday against Flagler College with kickoff set for 5 p.m. on Hartzler Field.

In the 22nd minute, junior Gaspard Mianne served the ball into the 18-yard box where it deflected off of sophomore Jordan Dechere’s foot, giving junior Levin Sandmann a clear shot at goal. The score put the Patriots up 1-0 and earned Sandmann his ninth goal of the season, third-best in the PBC.

GSW freshman Divin Moke entered the game just two minutes before scoring, tying the contest 1-1 at the 34:40 mark.

After a foul inside the box, Dechere converted a penalty kick past Hurricane senior goalkeeper Joshua Swift at the 50:31 mark.  It was Dechere’s fourth goal of the season and FMU had its second lead of the match at 2-1.

Just 37 seconds later at 51:08, senior Lucas Kimmel scored his first goal of the campaign as he knocked home a free kick by Thiago Elias.

Swift kept the match knotted at 2-2 when he saved a second penalty kick, this one taken by FMU sophomore Damien Tergella at the 53:16 mark.

Following a foul on Francis Marion, a free kick was put into the 6-yard box and the ball deflected off a Patriot defender and into the goal at 71:19.

FMU compiled 12 shots, while the Hurricanes had seven. Both teams tallied four corner kicks during the match. Both Sandmann and Dechere took four shots apiece.

FMU freshman goalkeeper Raul Guillamon Bejar posted one save compared to Swift’s four.

Prior to the match, FMU honored its three seniors: midfielder Andrew Kephart, midfielder and defender Harrison Smith, and defender Jevon Williams.
