(Des Moines, Iowa) - Despite tying a team record for most goals scored in a single match, the UMKC women's soccer team (2-4-3) suffered a tough 4-3 loss on the road to the Drake Bulldogs (9-2) Wednesday evening.

During the first minute with the ball in Kansas City's zone, Drake took a 1-0 lead when forward Laura Moklestad (2) found a sliding Ashlie Stokes (5) for the goal.

Nevertheless, the Kangaroos would answer in the third minute when midfielder Allison Schau (2) capitalized on a penalty kick after being fouled by Drake.

Still in the first period, same score, the Bulldogs regained the lead in the 18th minute when forward Generve Charles (4) snuck a shot by keeper Nina Tzianos for the goal. Moklestad (3) was awarded the assist for the second time in Wednesday's match.

At the half, Drake maintained its 2-1 lead over Kansas City along with out-shooting the Kangaroos, 7-4. In the net, Tzianos tallied three saves.

Coming out of the locker room, Drake pushed its lead to two in the 48th minute when Stokes (6) scored her second goal of the evening. Forward Paige Dusek (1) and midfielder Katie Helmlinger (1) were credited with the assists.

Later, Moklestad (2) tallied an unassisted goal of her own during the 72nd minute to make it a 4-1 contest.

However, the Kangaroos would not go down without a fight. About two minutes later, Kansas City cut the deficit back to two when forward Ellie Chadick (1) scored after securing the ball in the Bulldogs box. Midfielder Becky Blinzler (1) was awarded the assist.

Then in the 80th minute with the ball in Drake's territory, forward Hannah Chadick (2) fired a shot that went off the post, but midfielder Hunter Wagoner (1) was there for the rebound and score.

The Kangaroos continued their strong efforts to tie the game by mustering three more shots, including a strike by midfielder Alyssa Elver that resulted in a team save during the 88th minute. Yet, the Bulldogs were able to hold off Kansas City as they came away with the win.

At the end of the match, UMKC owned the shot-count, 19-16, with 15 coming in the second half.

Up next, the Blue & Gold will return to Kansas City for a two-game homestand beginning with Alabama A&M on Saturday evening (7 p.m.), followed by Missouri State on Monday, Sept. 24 (7 p.m.).
