SFU Settles For a 2-2 Draw In Double Overtime Against Western Washington

Bellingham, WA - The SFU Clan and the Western Washington University Vikings fought throughout the evening, trading chances, and eventually playing to a 2-2 draw in the Clan’s Great Northwest Athletic Conference finale this evening in Bellingham, WA.

SFU opened the scoring in the 25th minute as Josh Bennett scored on a penalty kick for his seventh goal of the season to make it 1-0.

Western Washington put all kinds of pressure on the Clan as the half came to a close but Sheldon Steenhuis kept WWU off the board, preserving the Clan’s 1-0 lead at the half.

Western Washington solved Steenhuis early in the second half as Tye Hastings put one past the SFU keeper in the 58th minute for his third goal of the season, tying the score.

Minutes later, the Clan got the go ahead goal as leading scorer Carlo Basso tapped in a rebound off a shot by Juan Sanchez to make the score 2-1 for SFU.

With a perfect GNAC record in sight, in the 84th minute, Keith Ferris made good on his attempt from 10 yards out, tying the score at two apiece, sending the game in overtime.

The Clan put all kinds of pressure on WWU in overtime, with several corner kicks and shots that went just wide. SFU could not capitalize on their overtime chances, and the game ended in a 2-2 draw, dropping SFU’s record to 16-0-1on the season.

SFU’s next game is against Sioux Falls in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on Saturday, November 5th at 7:00 p.m.
