SMU Slips Past Rice 2-1

August 24, 2018

HOUSTON — After Rice rallied to tie the game with a goal in the 62nd minute, visiting SMU scored the game-winner in the 77th for a 2-1 non-conference win over the Rice soccer team Thursday evening at Holloway Field in Houston.

SMU opened the scoring in the 10th minute on Courtney Sebazco's first goal of the season. Rice used some momentum from late in the first period for a sound and solid second half. Owl true freshman Delaney Schultz made a crafty steal of a pass in Mustang territory, then worked to get open at the 18 for just the second shot attempt of her collegiate career. Schultz may have had her very first collegiate shot attempt in the first half go just wide of the post, but the rookie from Saint Louis found the back of the SMU net on her second career shot to tie the contest 1-1 with close to 30 minutes remaining in regulation.

Rice held a 9-4 advantage in shots in the second half, but SMU's Allie Thornton scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 77th minute. It was already her third goal of the young season with goals in each of the team's first three games. The Owls finished with a 16-10 advantage in shots while SMU held a 4-2 margin in corner kicks. Rice used two goalkeepers, with junior Maya Hoyer and freshman Bella Killgore each recording one save in 45 minutes of action.

The Owls have wrapped-up the season-opening homestand and are next on the road for match at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday (Aug. 26). Start time vs. the Islanders is set for 7 pm in Corpus Christi.
